Information on the Developing Coronavirus Outbreak for Board District 5 Families

Dear Board District 5 families,

Yesterday, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic. While there have been no detected cases of coronavirus linked to our school communities so far, there are 20 confirmed cases of coronavirus in L.A. County, one of which resulted from community transmission of unknown origin. That means at least one person has gotten the virus without having traveled outside the country and without having come into contact with a person known to be infected.

This coronavirus outbreak will likely cause significant disruptions to our daily lives very soon, and our schools may need to be closed to prevent the further spread of the virus. It is not a matter of IF this will happen, but WHEN.

We urge all of our District families to begin NOW to figure out who will care for the children in their care if schools close.

To prepare for closures, District personnel are working diligently to ensure the continuation of our students’ education, school-provided meals, and the health and safety of school communities. All schools and staff have been asked to cancel district-sponsored out-of-state travel, the District is providing additional cleaning services at our school sites, and we are encouraging frequent hand-washing and other good hygiene practices in our classrooms.

The coronavirus illness is mild in roughly 80 percent of cases, but we all must do our part to prevent the spread of this disease to protect our community—especially the most vulnerable among us.

Please carefully review the Center for Disease Control’s guidelines for how to protect yourself and your family from the coronavirus. Wash your hands often, avoid close contact with people who are sick, stay home if you’re sick yourself, cover your coughs and sneezes, and clean and disinfect surfaces daily.

If you have any questions, please call LAUSD’s coronavirus hotline, which is open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at (213) 443-1300.
